Puerto Rico - Telecoms Market Overview Statistics & Forecasts

Puerto Rico has some of the highest rates of teledensity, cell-phone penetration and Internet usage in Latin America. However, despite being a US territory, Puerto Rico lags well behind the USA in terms of fixed-line and broadband penetration. This is partly because local fixed-line telephony, or more specifically the copper network, has stagnated in a market largely dominated by the incumbent Puerto Rico Telephone Company. The company’s fixed line dominance is expected to be further strengthened following the recent acquisition by Mexico’s giant, América Móvil. In contrast, with six network operators, the cell-phone market has been experiencing robust competition and growth, led by AT&T Mobility, Claro (PRTC) and Centennial de Puerto Rico. T-Mobile has also entered the market through its acquisition of SunCom. In addition, with an emerging VoIP sector, a growing broadband market, and a healthy cable TV sector, various convergence strategies and triple play services are rapidly emerging.
