This report discusses ATM’s technical characteristics including ATM’s provision of QoS and how it was intended to provide the basis for global networks carrying both packet and circuit-switched traffic for Internet, private networks, voice and video communications. The global adoption of TCP/IP and MPLS in favour of ATM is also discussed.
