Chinese Mobile Phone System Design Houses in 2006

When China's domestic mobile phone manufacturing industry first began to develop, the Chinese handset vendors displayed strong marketing and distribution capabilities, but were weak in handset design technology. Initially, they relied on Korean and Taiwanese handset makers to supply them with semi-finished handsets, final assembly of which could be performed in China. Gradually, the Chinese handset vendors' technical capabilities improved; however, due to the rapid expansion of their product lines, they still needed external assistance for mid-range and high-end models, hence the emergence of China's mobile phone system design houses, of which TechFaith, Simcom and CECW are the most important. This report will examine the current state of development of China's leading mobile phone design firms.
