After several years of flagging sales and increased input costs, 2008 was an especially tough year for juice manufacturers, as orange juice crops were down by about a third, and the prices manufacturers paid for juices and solids more than doubled in some cases. As a result, the leading manufacturers, Tropicana and Coca-Cola (Minute Maid), initiated a series of price increases, starting in January and continuing throughout the summer and autumn months.
