Clinical laboratory testing is generally categorized as either clinical testing, which is performed on body fluids including blood and urine, or anatomical pathology testing, which is performed on cytologic samples, tissue and other samples, including human cells. Clinical and anatomical pathology procedures are frequently ordered as part of regular physician office visits and hospital admissions in connection with the diagnosis and treatment of illnesses. Certain of these tests and procedures are used principally as tools in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide variety of medical conditions such as cancer, AIDS, endocrine disorders, cardiac disorders and genetic disease. The most frequently requested tests include blood chemistry analyses, urinalyses, blood cell counts, Pap tests, HIV tests, microbiology cultures and procedures and alcohol and other substance- abuse tests. Esoteric assays generally require more sophisticated instruments and highly skilled personnel, and are typically outsourced to independent clinical laboratories that specialize in such assays. The clinical laboratory industry consists primarily of three types of providers: hospital-based laboratories, physician-office laboratories and independent clinical laboratories. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has estimated that there are approximately 5,200 independent clinical laboratories in the United States. The major clinical testing companies estimate the annual market for their services to be more than $40 billion. There are presently two national independent clinical laboratories: LabCorp and Quest Diagnostics.
