Market Overview

SMT Equipment Market Sees Revival
Around 2000, growth opportunities in the surface mount technology (SMT) equipment market started dwindling, leading many vendors to start divesting their assets and exit the market. Today, it has experienced a revival of sorts, primarily due to the legislation on lead-free manufacturing and the increased electronic assembly taking place in China and other developing countries. Even with the increased usage of no clean solder paste, there still exists a need for electronic assemblers to clean their assemblies.
However, taking advantage of opportunities in this mature market requires SMT equipment vendors to closely monitor market trends and direction. Historically, companies that did not constantly track major trends - such as the move from turret to gantry in the SMT placement market - ended up losing significant market share. To be successful, companies will have to focus more on engineering and working closely with clients in their process changes since lead-free manufacturing is fast gathering pace, says the analyst of this research service. SMT vendors will need to be very aggressive in addressing customer needs in 2006, because it can be a make-or-break year for the SMT cleaning equipment market.

Lead-free Manufacturing Has Major Impact on SMT Cleaning Equipment Market
The year 2005 marked a turning point in the SMT cleaning equipment market as several electronic assemblers began complying with the legislation on lead-free manufacturing. This helped revitalize the stagnating market and opened up new opportunities for many equipment vendors. The lead-free process requires higher preheating and heating temperatures, causing changes in the flux that make it darker and more difficult to test. In addition, the greater amount of flux required for this process causes more residue to be deposited on the assembly and increases the importance of cleaning, as defects can occur in products if the assembly is not cleaned well.
Since lead-free manufacturing is being pushed by the Restriction of Hazardous Substance (RoHS) directive, lower cost of ownership is another factor in the lead-free environment that is driving the cleaning equipment market, remarks the analyst. Assemblers are always looking for ways to reduce the overall cost of ownership because previous methods of cleaning were too costly with lead free. This led many assemblers to invest in new equipment before the 2006 deadline on lead-free manufacturing. The impact of this driver is expected to be high throughout the forecast period.
