Market Overview
Wiper Blades Top the Wiper Systems Aftermarket The wiper blade segment is growing to be the largest revenue generator in the North American wiper systems aftermarket with replacements of blades becoming more popular than that of entire wiper arms. With a wide variety of connection styles to wiper arms, wiper blades have increased in part numbers for comprehensive coverage of vehicles by make and model. This factor contributes to the overall rise in unit demand for wiper system components. The wiper blade segment is fast advancing technologically. One of its recent innovations is the silicone squeegee of the blade in the aftermarket. Unlike traditional squeegees, these are more resistant to harsh weather conditions and are not easily susceptible to frequent wear and tear. The service life of the wiper blade is thereby increased. Several innovative and integrated wiper blades are entering the market, and are very popular as they can be installed on vehicles that were originally equipped with traditional wiper blades, using specific adapters for easy do-it-yourself installation. The most prominent introduction into the aftermarket is the Flat-Blade or Beam-Blade technology which is expected to be the future of wiper blade designs. Wiper arms, however, haven’t undergone any significant development.
Offshore Competition and Inventive Wiper Systems Challenge Wiper Refills and Arms Segment Despite efforts to incorporate new wiper motor programs in their product portfolio, domestic remanufacturers are at a risk of losing market share to foreign companies. Foreign competition is prominent in two product segments of the wiper systems aftermarket - wiper blades and wiper motors. Prices of wiper refills for entry-level wiper blades have fallen due to low-cost imports of wiper blades from Asian countries, says the analyst of this research service. While the intense competition does not affect reputed manufacturers as they appeal to the quality- and brand-conscious consumers, it poses a significant threat to domestic manufacturers that compete on price. More re-branding and re-packaging can be expected, especially at the entry-level and mid-price point product categories, says the analyst.
