ASEAN 3 Automotive Sensors Markets
Frost & Sullivan, Jan 2006
This
Additional Information
Expert Frost & Sullivan analysts thoroughly examine the following market sectors in this research:
By Application:
- Automotive sensors
By Technologies:
- Gas sensors
- Level sensors
- Temperature sensors
- Position sensors
- Pressure sensors
- Accelerometers
The following technologies are covered in this research:
- Gas Sensors: Gas sensors are used in measuring the composition of the exhaust gases coming out of the vehicle. It provides feedback to the engine control to vary the fuel air mixture so as to ensure that the exhaust composition remains within the norms. They are of two types, oxygen and NOx sensors. - Pressure Sensors: Pressure sensors discussed in this research service are basically of two types. The first one is the manifold air pressure sensor used in the powertrain to regulate the air fuel ratio in the vehicle. The second kind of sensor is the tire pressure sensor which is used to check if optimum pressure is being maintained in the tire to minimize chances of the tire overheating. - Position Sensors: Position sensors are sophisticated sensors, which indicate the position of various systems in the car to the ECU. These are used for electronic systems that replace mechanical linkages in automobiles. These sensors pave the way for X by wire systems of the future. The sensor types under this are throttle position, steering position, pedal position sensors, and so on. - Temperature Sensors: Temperature sensors send information to the car's computer about the ambient temperature in various parts of a car. Other than measuring the temperature inside the car, they are being used to measure temperatures in the gear box, crankshaft and so on. The temperature sensors may vary from basic thermistors to platinum thermocouples. - Level Sensors: Level sensors are mainly used to measure fuel levels in the fuel tank. Nowadays they also find use in measuring hydraulic fluids, wash and wipe fluids, and other such fluids in cars. Apart from the basic float and arm sensor, new developments include electronic sensors such as thick and thin film and resistance wire sensors. - Accelerometers : Accelerometers are employed in airbags to detect crash and inflate them on impact. There are various types such as low G and high G sensors. Recently, radar-based accelerometer sensors have been introduced and they sense a crash even before the impact and inflate airbags to minimize loss.
Market Overview
Emission Norms Expected to Drive Sales of Automotive OE Sensors With a view to regulating vehicular emissions, all countries in the ASEAN 3 region are implementing stringent emission norms. While Thailand is at the forefront of the effort, implementing Euro III norms, Malaysia is following Euro II regulations and Indonesia is expected to completely adopt Euro II in 2007. Moreover, Thailand is likely to upgrade to Euro IV by 2008 and countries in the ASEAN region are working towards a mutual recognition agreement, which includes setting up common emission norms. Similar to the global trend, these regulations are largely expected to drive the sales of most types of sensors in the region and gas sensors, in particular, are likely to benefit immensely from the emission norms prescribed by the governments of these countries. In addition to emission norms, the emergence of the ASEAN 3 region as a hub for vehicular exports could benefit the sales of automobile sensors in the region. Cars assembled in the region are being increasingly exported to Australia as well as Europe and require various sensors to meet the latest emission and safety norms in place in these advanced markets. "This apart, new cars introduced in the ASEAN 3 region are installed with electronic control units (ECUs) and employ advanced systems such as antilock braking system (ABS) among others that require inputs from more than three to four sensors," notes the analyst of this research service. "As a result, position sensors such as throttle and steering position units that provide inputs to the ECU and temperature sensors, which input temperatures in various parts of the vehicle into the ECU are likely to see greater uptake."
Customer Price Sensitivity and Expansion in Diesel Vehicle Market Pose Challenges Among the market restraints, the growth of the diesel vehicle market in the ASEAN 3 region is likely to have a significant impact on the sales of certain sensors employed in cars. It is estimated that diesel vehicles accounted for around 40.0 percent of the vehicles sold in the region in 2005 and due to technical hitches, units such as the gas sensors are not generally employed in these cars. While such challenges are expected to be overcome in the future, market participants will also have to account for the price-sensitive nature of the vehicle market in the ASEAN 3 region. Customers in the region are not completely aware of the benefits of employing these sensors in their cars and this deters vehicle manufacturers from including additional features in their products. Throttle position sensors are likely to lead the growth in the position sensors market and are expected to further enhance the revenue share of position sensors. Gas sensors have shown good revenue growth since 2003, owing to the adherence to Euro II norms in Thailand and Malaysia, and demand for such sensors is expected to be strong during the forecast period. "The ASEAN 3 automotive sensors markets are still in their introductory stage and from 2006-2007, offer scope for sensor manufacturers and suppliers to forge strategic alliances with automakers and assemblers for the supply of sensors in this market," says the analyst. "With the market expected to grow further from 2010-2012, sensor manufacturers and suppliers can also look at introducing advanced sensors such as tire pressure sensors, which have captured the attention of automakers in Japan and South Korea."
