Deregulation Creates Opportunities for VoIP Services in
Emerging Geographic Markets
Approximately 3.3 billion minutes of retail voice-over
Internet protocol traffic originated from within Europe,
the Middle East, and Africa in 2001. Though these regions
currently account for only 14 percent of world traffic,
that percentage is expected to nearly double by 2008.
New opportunities for VoIP deployment are emerging in
traditionally less-competitive markets, such as Central
and Eastern Europe.
Fueled by the trend towards telecommunications
deregulation, implementation of VoIP technologies will
enable substantial economic developments in
low-teledensity, low-income regions. These services will
also present significant new revenue sources for both
