Global Hosted IP Telephony and Integrated Access Services Market
Frost & Sullivan, June 2003
Next-Generation Services and Solutions Redefine Market Roles and Revenue Distribution
Increasing adoption of IP telephony is opening up new opportunities for voice and data service providers as well as systems integrators, resellers, and vendors. A large variety of market participants have introduced differentiating hosted IP telephony services, shifting large revenue streams away from traditional carriers. Therefore, incumbents are continuously losing market share to both IP private branch exchange (PBX) vendors and hosted IP telephony service providers.
This Frost & Sullivan research examines the World Hosted IP Telephony and Integrated Access Services Markets. It offers revenue forecasts by market segments and covers key drivers and restraints affecting market growth. It also provides strategic recommendations to overcome market challenges. The study analyzes three main market segments - Centrex IP, IP Centrex/hosted IP PBX, and integrated access services with Centrex features.
Hybrid Solutions Facilitate Migration to IP Telephony Services
Aggressive promotion of the productivity and cost benefits of IP telephony is boosting adoption in both mature and less developed markets. However, large amounts of legacy infrastructure can hinder efficient migration to a hosted IP telephony service. This problem can be circumvented by using hybrid solutions. With a mix of traditional and next-generation telecommunications solutions and/or a mix of hosted services and premises solutions, enterprises can make a smooth transition to converged IP-based services, states the analyst.
Enterprises that already have customer premise equipment (CPE) are not expected to switch to a fully hosted solution soon but are likely to deploy integrated access with some additional Centrex features to save costs. Most large enterprises test IP telephony services at smaller branch offices or new locations while still amortizing their old systems at other locations. By providing a migration path, hybrid solution providers will be able to penetrate the enterprise market steadily and pave the way for the deployment of more sophisticated services.
Benefits of Hosted IP Telephony to Help Carriers Retain Customers
Hosted IP telephony offers business customers greater benefits than traditional hosted telephony services. It is cost efficient in terms of moves, adds, and changes as well as intra-office calling including communication with telecommuters and branch offices. Further, hosted IP telephony provides a varied package of enhanced features such as conferencing, unified messaging, and a web-based call management console. The flat monthly fees also appeal to business customers because they make company budgeting simpler and more convenient.
The benefits of hosted IP telephony are expected to help service providers improve retention rates among current Centrex customers that have been gradually migrating to CPE solutions, notes the analyst. In the short term, hosted IP telephony is likely to help service providers gain further penetration among small- and medium-sized enterprises. In the long term, it is anticipated to help them draw market shares away from CPE vendors in the large enterprise market segment as well.
Additional Information
The following technologies are covered in this research:
Centrex IP
Centrex IP involves the deployment of a GR 303 gateway and a Class 5 switch at the carrier's central office. The Class 5 switch provides most of the business telephony functionality. The gateway enables the integration of the traditional switch with the next-generation infrastructure at the customer's premises
The business customer does not purchase and own a customer premises telephony system - a PBX or a key telephone system (KTS)
Some software-based features may be offered as well, such as a Web-based, call management application that allows customers to manage their service features and incoming and outgoing calls
IP Centrex
IP Centrex is an end-to-end IP-based service utilizing a next-generation call control and call routing equipment at the carrier's central office including a soft switch or an application server
The business customer does not purchase and own a customer premises telephony system - a PBX or a key telephone system (KTS)
Typically, customers use IP telephones, although some deployments include traditional telephones and an integrated access device
The Centrex architecture at the carrier's central office is partitioned so that the carrier can utilize the same architecture to service multiple customers
Hosted IP PBX
A hosted IP PBX could refer to an IP Centrex-type architecture that offers a greater variety of more sophisticated features and capabilities than a typical IP Centrex architecture. Such enhanced features include an attendant console and shared call appearances.
A hosted IP PBX could also refer to a non-partitioned IP PBX hosted by a service provider on behalf of a single customer. There are relatively few instances of such arrangements, therefore, this study only analyzes the trend but does not offer separate projections for this type of solutions.
A hosted IP PBX could be located at the customer's premises or at the service provider's premises, but is owned and managed by the service provider
Integrated Access Business Telephony Services with Centrex Features
This service category includes converged voice and data access services offered to customers that typically own some low-end key system or PBX and traditional telephones
These services have been included in this study because service providers offer some Centrex -like features such as hunt groups, conferencing, call waiting, caller ID and voicemail in addition to basic converged access. Most of them have the architectural capabilities to offer more sophisticated Centrex-type features in the future These services have been included in the study also because the majority of hosted IP telephony providers are currently deploying a greater amount of converged access services than true-hosted IP telephony services.
There is a significant potential for such services in the near and medium term. These services represent a convenient migration path for both service providers and business customers to end-to-end IP telephony
