Educating Plant Operators on New Technologies to Help Desalination Equipment Manufacturers Expand Markets

Desalination plant operators usually have extensive knowledge about their installed treatment systems; however, they lack awareness of new technologies that can improve current processes. These operators, along with municipal and some industrial facilities, can benefit immensely from advertisements, demonstrations, and other educational efforts. Such campaigns can also provide them with the information necessary to make purchase decisions. Anticipating end-user needs and suggesting solutions to technical requirements can help manufacturers to gain competitive advantage.

This research service examines the U.S. desalination plant markets and discusses the opportunities for increasing the number of brackish water and seawater treatment facilities in the United States. The study offers revenue forecasts and market structure, as well as covers key drivers and restraints affecting growth. It provides trends by geography, feedwater quality, technology, and discusses the various market influences on the desalination plant market.

Threat of Localized Water Shortage Generates Greater Interest in Desalination

In the United States, water shortage concerns are no longer exclusive to the West; they are becoming alarmingly common in southern states such as Florida, California, and New Mexico. In many coastal states, drought conditions, salt-water intrusion, and a rapidly growing population have severely stressed both ground and surface water. Some inland states also suffer from brackish groundwater supplies. Regional efforts are being taken to address alternative sources such as desalination and sustainability approaches.

Increasing awareness about the enormity of the water shortage situation and greater public involvement give the issue a political slant, creating the need to conceive radical water supply solutions and allay misgivings, states the analyst. This has proven to be a windfall, generating a lot of positive press for desalination. Influential county and state government officials are doing their bit by securing allowances for desalination operations or at least pilot plants.

Research and Development Efforts to Focus on Environment-friendly Processes

Rising concerns about environmental damage is also highlighting the need to minimize the impact of briny discharge on local ecology. Scientists are working on creating more user-friendly technologies and methodologies to optimally use energy inputs, notes the analyst. New concepts or variations on existing concepts that can advance desalting technology are also being studied. They include hybrid desalting plants, reverse osmosis/power plant cogeneration, membrane development, and commercialization of novel processes such as capacitive deionization.

Desalination can satisfy the freshwater requirements of the United States and the prospects for this technology look encouraging as some small- and mid-size coastal as well as inland water-short areas look to desalted groundwater as a source of drinking water. However, the expenses are so high that only states in dire need are likely to buy it. Ongoing research is exploring ways to lower the cost per gallon/m3 of freshwater produced.
