Introduction:
The launch of Amevive, Biogen’s novel therapeutic protein, marks the start of a biologics revolution in the treatment of psoriasis, which will see at least four biologics available for psoriasis in the US in the next three years. In the atopic dermatitis market, Fujisawa with Protopic and Novartis with Elidel are struggling for ascendancy in the topical immunomodulators sector.

Scope:
- Assessment of psoriasis epidemiology data and patient potential, including disease definitions and areas of unmet need.

- Psoriasis sales data and forecasts to 2011, as well as an evaluation of key late stage products in development.

- Commercial analysis of topical immunomodulators in the atopic dermatitis market.

- Transcripts of interviews with key physician and industry opinion leaders on the future of the psoriasis and atopic dermatitis pipelines and markets.

Report Highlights:
FDA acceptance of clinical trials using batches of Raptiva produced separately by Genentech and Xoma means it is close to US marketing approval. However, the acceptance by the FDA that 2 companies can produce bioequivalent biologics may be an indicator that generic biologics will be approved if bioequivalence can be established.

This report identifies 14 patent licensing relationships affecting Amevive, Raptiva, Enbrel, Remicade, and Humira, of which six are currently disputed. Enbrel appears to be more exposed than its competitors, with five patent licensing agreements requiring payments to other companies only one of these agreements is disputed.

Early data show that 20% of patients are denied Amevive due to reimbursement status. Companies must learn from the experiences of Amevive in its immediate post-launch period and commit considerable resources to securing reimbursement of their products for patients in the US.

Reasons to Purchase:
- Understand why reimbursement status is the key issue governing the success of biologics for the treatment of psoriasis

- Investigate the importance of 'consumerization' in atopic dermatitis, as exemplified by the launch of Novartis' Elidel

- In a sector heavily dependent on licensing deals, appreciate why big pharma needs to worry about alienating potential partners
