Introduction

Opportunities for growth within certain eHealth markets in Germany are expected to be driven by reforms to the existing healthcare system that will change both patient and physician demands for eHealth services. As a result, there will be increasing opportunities for the pharmaceutical industry to offer access to Internet-based tools and services.

Scope

Presents the key findings from Datamonitor’s 2003 Physician Insight survey, involving interviews with 64 German physicians

Physician interviews investigate opinions relating to eHealth topics such as continuing medical education, practice websites and online forums

Explores the future of key eHealth markets in Germany and the implications for the pharmaceutical industry

Report Highlights

Physicians in Germany use the Internet for fast and convenient access to news and health information. In order to be successful in reaching physicians online, it is essential to have a clear understanding of their online information requirements, including the types of health information sought and their attitudes towards online information.

Most surveyed consumers in Germany do not favor the Internet as a health resource. Despite high Internet penetration rates, fewer than two in five consumers have gone online to look for health information, primarily because they did not consider the Internet as a source of health information.

While some areas of the eHealth market in Germany such as eDetailing, eSampling and ePrescribing have not yet seen any significant developments, there has been considerable activity in other areas. Most notably, this has been seen in the adoption of physician practice websites and physician use of the Internet to search for expert health opinion.
