The eHealth market in Spain has developed more slowly than in other European countries; however, physicians are receptive to using online and mobile technology for work purposes while many patients are using the Internet for research purposes and to communicate with physicians. There are increasing opportunities for the pharmaceutical industry to offer access to Internet-based tools and services.

Report Highlights

Consumers in Spain do not favor the Internet as a health information resource; however, research indicates this is due to a lack of access and low awareness of the Internet as a source of health information. While pharmaceutical companies can do little to increase penetration rates, they can raise awareness of online resources by marketing offline.

The uptake of electronic detailing services such as live video detailing has been limited. Only 11% of surveyed physicians in Spain reported having participated in an eDetailing session, although the majority of physicians would like eDetailing to play some role in their work in the future.

Despite very high participation rates for CME among physicians in Spain, relatively few physicians have participated in online CME. Only 13% of surveyed physicians had ever participated in an online CME course, indicating that there is a need to improve the quality and accessibility of online CME in order to increase penetration rates.
