Executive Summary

Egypt’s market for medical devices is large by regional standards, although this is principally due the population size, and per capita spending is lower than neighbouring countries such as Morocco. That said, a low per capita expenditure on medical devices indicates the enormous potential of this market in the longer term. Multinational companies have a growing presence either in the form of joint ventures with local partners or through sales offices.

The Egyptian healthcare industry is amidst a period of considerable change, centring around a growing trend towards privatisation. Prior to the 1990s, the sector was predominantly state-controlled, with the private sector playing only a minimal role in healthcare provision. While the government still retains a great degree of control, the private sector is now playing an increasingly important role, emerging largely as a result of the declining standard of public sector care. There are around 200 private hospitals in Egypt, operating nearly 15% of all beds.

Private healthcare development, however, has slowed in recent years, mainly due to economic uncertainty. At the same time, the depreciation of the currency has increased prices for imports. Combined with a slow-down of private health expenditure, private hospital demand, the main source of demand for high-end specification equipment in particular, is likely to stagnate in the short-term future.
