Transdermal & Transmucosal Delivery of Therapeutics, 2nd Edition
Drug and Market Development Publishing, Feb 2007, Pages: 300
New Transdermal & Transmucosal Delivery of Therapeutics, 2nd Edition market analysis report estimates the transdermal/transmucosal drug delivery market is poised for growth through 2010. This report highlights the technologies and drugs currently available for transdermal, buccal and intranasal routes of administration as well as an analysis of the potential market for drug delivery. A summary of the intellectual property landscape in this area, profiles of companies invested in transdermal and transmucosal drug delivery and interviews with key industry players round out this comprehensive report.
This report describes the technologies, marketed drugs, and drugs currently in the development pipeline where transdermal and transmucosal formulations provide a novel approach to drug delivery. This report focuses on prescription products, and also addresses over the counter (OTC) products such as nicotine patches, for systemic delivery. Purely topical applications (e.g., skin anesthesia by lidocaine gels and lotions) are not discussed in any detail. In addition to the discussion of products, the report profiles companies which D&MD considers integrated developers of transdermal and transmucosal products. Finally, the report provides a summary assessment of the market segment and an outlook to 2010.
The field of transdermal and transmucosal drug delivery has generated prescription and OTC products that have a total market size of around $3 billion in US sales in 2005. The majority of these sales were generated by products indicated for the treatment of pain. Osteoporosis, birth control, and hormone control are also important contributors to the top 200 retail drugs.
The OTC market’s largest product category is patches for smoking cessation.
Market position seems to hinge on patent protection for the trans-delivery system. An example of the importance of an I.P. barrier to market entry is Duragesic, (Johnson & Johnson). Sales of this product suffered a 52.9% decrease from 2004 to 2005. The Alza patent covering this product expired in 2004 and several competitors have entered the market thus reducing J&J’s grip on this product category.
The development pipeline is healthy and is summarized in this report. Several technology platforms for transdermal and transmuscal delivery are associated with a number of these developed projects. Methods involving electric current, sound, light, and heat energy are evolving and are also described in this report.
Total drug product sales will reach $4-6 million by 2010. The speed and control of drug concentrations provided by transdermal and transmucosal products continues to be an attractive route of administration. Patient compliance and quality of life are improved. Also, drugs that are not robust to transport via the gut have a better chance of systemic success if delivered across the skin.
