Introduction

Many card issuers are international, but few are a truly global. The Global Card Issuers takes an in-depth look at four players, including American Express and Citigroup, that operate on a truly global basis and analyses how they have achieved their global status. The briefing is set to be followed by future volumes analyzing other global card issuers, such as HSBC.

Scope

Datamonitor defines global card issuers as those that are present in over ten countries on at least two continents.

The briefing considers both general purpose and private label issuance

Four in-depth profiles are provided: American Express, Cetelem, Citigroup and Standard Chartered.

Highlights

In terms of total card numbers Citigroup is the number one player in the world. Indeed, at the end of 2002 it had over 120 million cards in issue. This number is likely to have risen dramatically in 2003 due to the Citigroups' acquisition of Sears consumer credit business.

In terms of geographical coverage, American Express was the winner of the four players examined. It is present in close to 80 countries around the world.

Partnerships and acquisitions were two of the principle strategies used by issuers to grow and extend geographical reach. Citigroup, in particular, has grown strongly through acquisition, while American Express has made extensive use of partnerships.
