Executive Summary
The pharmaceutical market in 2009 was estimated to be US$4.6 billion, equal to US$492 per capita. The pharmaceutical market represents approximately 12.0% of total healthcare expenditure and 1.2% of GDP.
The market is expected to increase at a rate of 4.2% per year at current prices over the next few years, to be worth in excess of US$6.8 billion by 2014.
However, Sweden is likely to be affected by the global economic downturn, with real GDP growth expected to fall to -3.5% in 2009, according to figures from the Economist Intelligence Unit, and beginning to recover in 2011 with a real growth of 1.3%, rising to 2.7% by 2014.
As is common with other Western European countries, Sweden has an advanced healthcare system which is partially privately funded. As a percentage of GDP, health expenditure is above the European average.
Domestic production is focused primarily on retail medicaments, accounting for 97% of total production in 2004. Total production increased by approximately 2.9% in 2004 over 2003, to reach US$6.6 billion, decreasing by 6.4% in local currency terms.
Apoteket AB is currently the exclusive pharmaceutical retailer in Sweden, to both public and hospital pharmacies. However, the pharmacy monopoly is soon to be deregulated, with the introduction of independent pharmacies from July 2009. Apoteket AB will remain a key competitor in the market, however, with around half of the pharmacies remaining under state ownership.
