Treatment Algorithms: Hypertension 3rd Edition - Opportunities In Resistant and Hypertensive Sub-Populations
Datamonitor, July 2002
The anti-hypertensives market is an attractive target for pharma companies due to the size of the patient population. Yet a large proportion of these patients remain undiagnosed and treatment of plain hypertension is centered on generics. Datamonitor believes that it is the niche hypertensive populations, such as diabetic hypertension, hypertensive renal disease, isolated systolic hypertension and hypertensives of African descent who are paving the way for profit generating opportunities.Analysis of diagnosis, treatment and blood pressure control rates for each of the hypertensive populationsAssessment of the extent to which physicians treat sub-populations differentially and the opportunites this createsDetailed evaluation of the use of combination therapy, drug classess and individual brands across the hypertensive sub-populationsIdentification of what novel compounds need to demonstrate and which patients they need to target in order to maximize market penetrationIn-depth interview transcripts with global opinion leaders concerning the current and future management of hypertensive populationsThe failure of 22-35% of patients to reach target blood pressure goals is reflective of the fact that combination therapy is underused. It also indicates that improving patient compliance with therapy is one of the most important aims for companies developing novel approaches to the treatment of hypertension and cardiovascular risk factors.Physicians currently treat the hypertensive sub-populations in a similar manner to the overall population. However, Datamonitor believes that niche populations offer the greatest commercial opportunities in this market. The greatest potential for developmental agents initially lies in the resistant populations, which account for up to 27% of the difficult-to-treat sub-populations.ACE inhibitors and Aiirbs are being increasingly prescribed, at the expense of beta blockers, diuretics and CCBs. Although the use of these older agents will be partly sustained by their additional indications, many of which are often co-morbid with hypertension, it is these drugs, particularly the CCBs, that will be the most susceptible to competition from newer agents.Identify the most lucrative target niche hypertensive populations in order to successfully position developmental productsUnderstand how to position new anti-hypertensive therapies to maximize profitable opportunitiesAccess recommendations for improving competitive positioning through an understanding of the future direction of the marketGain insight into prescribing patterns and physician opinion in hypertensive populations in order to to drive growth in the existing market
