Winning the Race for Europe's Last Mile: New Broadband Access Strategies and Technologies
Pyramid Research, Inc., Jan 2002, Pages: 31
Incumbent telcos’ dominance of the last mile is as imposing as ever. Unless their debt problems overwhelm them - an unlikely event in our view - they will reap most of the benefits of the broadband growth surge that is now under way in Western Europe. Western Europe’s incumbents have learned how to make their Isdn business work for, not against, migration to DSL. Expect CEE incumbents to co-opt this experience soon.
This is the only report to cover all of Europe, including a profile of the Hungarian operator Matav. With the exception of Matav, incumbents in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) have yet to market DSL aggressively. Nonetheless, it is their market to win, given the advantages of scale and last-mile assets, and here too the opportunity for new entrants will remain with higher-end SME customers.
This report focuses on where operators have succeeded - or failed - in implementing effective broadband rollout strategies. Specifically, we focus in on what factors have fed their success, what pitfalls have plagued them, and what risks they face going forward. Highlights include: operator Profiles of: British Telecom, Deutsche Telekom, and Matav the impact of Catv operators spotlight on Residential Broadband Penetration in the UK and Spain and broadband subscriber forecasts to 2006 for 13 European countries.
