USB 2007: Wireless Finally Arrives
In-Stat/MDR, April 2007, Pages: 60
The universal serial bus (USB) continued its success in 2006, with over two billion devices shipping in the PC, PC peripheral, consumer electronics (CE), communications, and automotive segments. And this growth is expected to continue, with nearly four billion USB-enabled devices expected to ship in 2011.
In 2006, PCs and PC peripherals saw continued transition to high-speed USB. The CE segment has seen continued adoption of USB in digital cameras, portable digital audio players, and set-top boxes. In the communications segment, mobile phones continued to adopt full-speed USB as an interconnect in large numbers in 2006.
Wireless USB is the biggest news currently in the USB world. Based on Ultrawideband technology, wireless USB backers are attempting to replace the USB cables on the PC desktop, as well as facilitate temporary connections between mobile and fixed devices, such as digital still cameras and printers. The first WUSB devices are expected to ship in mid-2007.
This report contains five-year forecasts for the penetration of low- and full-speed USB, high-speed USB, and wireless USB into 44 separate applications. Five-year forecasts for average selling prices for USB host controllers, peripheral controllers, hub controllers, and wireless USB chip and module solutions are also provided, in addition to brief profiles of major USB silicon and IP suppliers.
