Market Overview

Growth in North American Enterprise IP Telephony End-point Markets As Benefits Become Evident

Since its inception, IP telephony was seen as a means of reducing communication expenses by companies through toll bypass and voice trunking of remote offices. Nowadays the scenario has changed with VoIP gaining traction in the recent years as enterprises are realizing that the benefits of IP telephony exceed mere cost reductions and that merging voice and data in a single network provides an enhanced communication experience. Companies are increasingly interested in the convergence that IP communication grants and the integration of multiple applications in a single interface or device.

'Therefore, in order to benefit from the applications and feature-rich telephony platforms, enterprises are choosing to replace their legacy end points with new high-tech IP ones that grant the increased functionality of next-generation communication,' notes the analyst of this research service. 'IP telephony end-point vendors are addressing this demand by developing technology that provides enterprise customers with productivity-enhancing applications and easy-to-use-and-deploy devices.' Deskphone developers have invested time and resources in mastering devices for the multiple roles within companies. Additionally, end points that support extensible markup language (XML) and telephony application programming interface (TAPI) applications are gaining traction as these enable independent developers as well as companies themselves to develop customized applications.

Vendors Must Address Interoperability Issues Arising From SIP Implementation

The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), designed to become the industry standard for multimedia applications, continues to bolster demand for IP end points that operate under this protocol. Currently, SIP only supports a few of the enhanced functionalities that proprietary protocols do. Therefore, to ensure complete interoperability between their systems and the end points, most vendors have extended the protocol to create ‘proprietary versions of SIP or have chosen to support basic SIP and their own proprietary protocols in their platforms. Consequently, most of the enterprises deploying a telephony system choose to deploy the same vendors’ end points to grant all the features that the platform supports.

'However, as the standard matures, more of these advanced telephony features are likely to be supported by SIP and end points will become more functional in third-party systems,' states the analyst. 'Until then, vendors are likely to support basic SIP functionality as well as try to provide their customers with a better experience and a different value proposition by using their proprietary protocols or using adapted versions of SIP.'
