The Global Mobile Capex Index - Analyzing the Big MNO Spenders
Pyramid Research, Inc., June 2007, Pages: 81
Mobile operator capital expenditure (Capex) is becoming more stable, after years of breakneck growth. Capex remains affected by a range of factors, including coverage, capacity, customer demand, the trend toward convergence and all-IP next-generation networks (NGNs), competitors’ network enhancements, or simply the need to create competitive advantage. Many mobile network operators (MNOs) have been upgrading their networks to 3G technologies such as UMTS/HSDPA and EV-DO to support rapid increases in data usage. Data has become a focus for mobile operators to offset declining voice revenues; while voice traffic has increased due to subscriber growth and fixed mobile substitution, competition has driven down the price per minute to the consumer.
To provide a reliable indicator of the evolution of global MNO Capex, we have created an MNO Capex Index comprising 15 top mobile operators from both emerging and mature markets in the world. The companies in our Index include América Móvil, AT&T Mobility, Bharti Airtel, China Mobile, China Unicom, MTN, MTS, NTT DoCoMo, T-Mobile, 02, Orange, Sprint Nextel, Telefónica Móviles, Verizon Wireless, and Vodafone. By our estimates, these companies account for around 63% of the world’s total MNO Capex, and 70-75% of overall MNO service revenue.
In the report The Global Mobile Capex Index: Analyzing the Big MNO Spenders, we analyze Capex levels, trends, and drivers, and compares the strategies of 15 MNOs. We provide a top-level analysis of the Index on an annual and a quarterly basis, emphasizing the largest and smallest players within the Index, the biggest movers, and the fastest and slowest in terms of Capex growth.
This report provides insight into business opportunities for mobile network vendors as well as benchmarks for operators worldwide. It examines aggregate trends in Capex at each of the 15 MNOs in the Index over time, evaluates spending on Capex components such as infrastructure, civil works, and applications, and focuses on the relationship between Capex and service revenue. The report also analyzes the relative rankings of the companies in the Index.
