The UK Market For Kitchen Furniture 2007
Business and Research Associates, May 2007, Pages: 72
The research took place during the period from April to May 2007 and this report presents the findings from that investigation.
For the purpose of this project we have concentrated on kitchen unit furniture adhering to the following definition of the products:
‘Kitchen unit furniture’ comprises principally kitchen storage units capable, singly or in combination, of being fitted into a given wall space. Certain of such units may also be used as free standing units complete in themselves. Storage units are normally classified as either base units, when they stand on the floor, or as wall units when they are affixed to the wall. Other types of unit found in the kitchen include sink units, housing units for a wide range of domestic appliances, breakfast bars and peninsular or island units, room dividers and tall units designed as broom cupboards and the like.
Kitchen units may be supplied as fully assembled furniture or may be supplied for self-assembly; we can identify, therefore, two distinct product categories as follows:-
- fully assembled and finished - ‘knocked down’ for self-assembly and finished Within the kitchen unit market there has been a strong trend since the 1970’s towards self-assembly products; such products may be assembled in the home or less frequently by the builder on site. The nature of the product enables them to be packed individually in flat cartons, thus facilitating storage for the distributor and enabling a cash and carry service to be offered to the customer at a competitive rate. However, the installation requirements often necessitate the use of a professional, since electrical and plumbing services are often also needed. Fully assembled units once formed the bulk of the market, but their share of the market has been declining steadily for a long time. Sales of such products remain strong in the medium to higher priced sector of the market, although rising standards of kitchen furniture manufacture and fierce price competition in the industry have tended to blur the distinctions between rigid and self-assembly products.
The market under review is the UK market comprising the following geographical areas:-
England Wales Scotland Northern Ireland
Methodology
The project was carried out using the following research methods: - Desk and bibliographic research - Telephone interviews - Personal interviews - Analysis and evaluation of information
The initial stages of the survey consisted of desk research, which was used to extract and collate published information on the market under review and to obtain details of manufacturers and suppliers and the products currently available. Desk research was also used to evolve a suitable sampling frame for personal and telephone interviews.
Telephone interviews are the most economic means of obtaining basic information and are most useful when the data being collected is of a standardised nature. Accordingly this method was used to obtain the bulk of information in this research project. In addition, a number of personal interviews were carried out in those circumstances where the information required was of a more complex nature.
A summary of the interviews carried out during the course of this investigation is shown in Appendix II.
