Executive Summary
5 Key Markets Covered! Egypt Iran Jordan Saudi Arabia UAE
Highlights from the region IRAN The Iranian medical market is ranked just outside of the top 40 in the world and is one of the larger markets in the Middle East, although in per capita terms the market is only slightly larger than the less wealthy Asian nations. The market is almost entirely dominated by imports, only basic consumable items such as syringes, needles & catheters, dental instruments & fittings and orthopaedic appliances are manufactured locally.
Continuing government investment has resulted in an improved health sector, with modernised services and facilities being built annually. Health expenditure is equal to around 4.8% of GDP.
Foreign firms, especially US-based companies, find it difficult to operate in Iran due to tense international relations and may find themselves distributing their products via local agents, or even via neighbouring countries such as the UAE.
SAUDI ARABIA The Saudi economy relies heavily on the price of oil; if prices are high, the markets remain strong. If, however, oil prices fall, the markets contract and the economy slows down. It has also been known to cause late payment to creditors.
Under the Sixth Development Plan, the healthcare sector expanded rapidly and the government hopes to sustain that growth by investing in construction and other projects. In 2005 alone, US$448 million was allocated to the construction and renovation of health facilities. It must be noted however, that tertiary sector hospitals are highly advanced; the Development Plans are generally aimed at improving primary healthcare provision.
Saudi Arabia has no official standard for medical products, but the majority of physicians are trained to Western standards and will want to use the best equipment available. Foreign companies must have a local agent and tariffs apply to some medical equipment.
UAE Although UAE is one of the wealthiest countries in the Middle East, health expenditure accounts for just 3.3% of GDP, one of the lowest levels in the region. A number of challenges face the healthcare sector, including rapid population growth, a large number of foreign workers, poor immunisation rates and a rise in infectious diseases. In response, the government has announced a myriad of construction and renovation projects in recent years, many of which are now nearing completion, or are already fully operational.
Domestic production is limited and the market is heavily reliant on imports, which have almost doubled since 2001.
The UAE acts as a trading post for medical equipment and supplies destined for other countries in the region, notably Iran and Pakistan. Market access is also limited for overseas firms if a local agent is not appointed; agreements are usually exclusive. The market remains unregulated although international standards are recognised. .....
