This title provides information on the nine American Dental Association-recognized dental specialties and two advanced general dentistry programs annually accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Covering the 2005-06 academic year, this publication provides annual information on advanced dental specialty and general dentistry education programs accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. It features general demographic data, enrollment and graduate levels, application deadlines, and tuition and stipends at the individual program and aggregate levels. In the 2005-06 academic year, 714 accredited advanced dental education programs enrolled 2,930 first-year students/residents (5,577 students/residents overall), and reported 2,735 graduates from the previous year.

This report summarizes information obtained from the “2005-06 Survey of Advanced Dental Education”. The purpose of this survey was to gather general demographic data, enrollment levels, graduate statistics, application deadlines, tuition and stipends from advanced dental education programs (dental school and non-dental school based) accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). The survey has been conducted for the past 38 years as a means of supporting the accreditation of advanced dental education programs. Trend information collected in the annual surveys is utilized in the Commission's scheduled site visits during the accreditation process.

The questionnaire was completed by administrators responsible for all accredited specialty and postdoctoral general dentistry programs. The population consisted of program directors who work in dental schools, hospitals and other institutions providing advanced dental education. In the 2005-06 series, specialty programs are those of advanced education in the following disciplines: Dental Public Health, Endodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Clinical Fellowships in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontics, and Prosthodontics. Postdoctoral general dentistry programs include General Practice Residency and Advanced Education in General Dentistry. Institutions and dental schools usually, but not always, offer a combination of these programs.

The “Survey of Advanced Dental Education” was conducted online in 2005. A total of 718 letters (345 dental school programs and 373 non-dental school programs) were mailed to accredited and recently discontinued programs in July 2005 with a deadline in September 2005. Letters instructed deans and program directors how to access and complete the survey online. Follow-up letters were mailed to non-respondents in October and November. As completion of this survey is required for accreditation purposes, a 100% response rate was obtained by April 2006 from all programs in full operation.

A separate survey, called the “2005-06 Survey of Dental Schools to Identify Advanced Programs Not Accredited by the Commission on Dental Education”, was also used to obtain enrollment and graduate statistics from non-accredited advanced education programs offered by dental schools. All dental school deans received this survey and were requested to complete it for their programs not accredited by CODA. Enrollment and graduate information from this survey is reported in Table 15.
