Neuropathic Pain Insight - Life Beyond Gabapentin
Datamonitor, Feb 2004, Pages: 677
Introduction
The huge success of Pfizer’s Neurontin (gabapentin) in the neuropathic pain market has encouraged drug manufacturers to explore the potential of their inline and pipeline products in this billion-dollar therapy area. Indeed, as gabapentin finally loses patent protection, and other companies launch products onto the market over the coming years, Pfizer will no longer control the sector.
Scope
Quantitative treatment data from over 594 physicians: 80 from Japan, 82 from France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK, and 104 from the US
For each country there is analysis of epidemiology, referral patterns, and treatment of five neuropathic pain types and fibromyalgia
Physician perception of current treatments and identification of strategic issues including clinical trial design, unmet needs, and marketing
Coverage of the hot topics including the ‘indication versus symptoms’ debate, generic gabapentin, opioid potential, and a focus on the future market
Report Highlights
The current neuropathic pain market suffers from lack of public awareness, poor physician education (often leading to misdiagnosis), under-utilization of effective drugs, inappropriate use of medications, and regional variations in drug availability.
Despite considerable sales deriving from diabetic neuropathic pain prescriptions, gabapentin does not benefit from FDA approval, offering opportunities to new market entrants. Several companies are battling to be first-to-market, although Datamonitor expects Pfizer will enjoy this status when its follow-on drug, pregabalin, launches in 2004.
The FDA strategy to grant narrow indications only is not entirely limiting from a commercial perspective. Datamonitor believes a narrowly defined indication offers three main advantages: a focused market; greater ability to dominate one indication; the ability to extend the lifecycle of the product with further indications.
