SDP-Enabled Converged Voice Services: The IMS Killer App
In-Stat/MDR, Aug 2007, Pages: 46
Over the past few years, there has been much attention given to IMS and the plethora of next-generation multimedia applications that are coming our way. Mobile operators are looking to IMS to introduce compelling 3G data services. Fixed-line operators are seeking to stem the tide of consumer line losses and declining revenue. All are in search of a killer application. Service Delivery Platforms (SDPs) are a key ingredient in supporting next-generation converged services. This report examines the role of SDPs in today?s telecom markets and outlines operator deployment strategies. As a case study, the requirements for a converged voice services (CVS) product offering is presented, illustrating how SDP technology available today can enable next-generation consumer services. The converged voice service combines existing mobile and VoIP services with a common set of network features and functions supported by IMS and, more specifically, by a service delivery framework.
The market opportunity for converged consumer voice services is presented to support the conclusion that building demand for IP-based communications must start with services that appeal to the consumer mass market. For this reason, converged voice services, similar to what is outlined in this report, may be the real IMS killer application.
