2007 Database of Powertrain and Driveline System Offerings on Light Vehicles in U.S.
Frost & Sullivan, Aug 2007
Automakers Vie with Each Other to Offer the Most Innovative Powertrain Systems
Powertrain systems in automobiles have continuously evolved to meet the increasing need for fuel efficiency, reduce or produce the desired noise levels, and enhance the vehicle’s load bearing capacity, maneuverability, and safety. Their multiple functions make them the ideal choice as a product differentiator in the automobile market. Apart from offering variations in designs, engine designers have to be constantly aware of concerns regarding depleting oil reserves and increasing popularity of alternate fuels. To meet end-user demand, they have to design and develop an eco-friendly engine system that offers maximum mileage and minimum fuel wastage, appealing to every consumer segment.
Before devising an inventive system, market leaders will have to compulsorily zero in on a vehicle type and its systems. They should also assess the position of the vehicle and end users’ perception of it in comparison to the competition. 'Knowing competitor offerings is a key part of the decision process in developing various powertrain systems for inclusion on upcoming vehicles,' says the analyst of this research. 'The complexity of powertrain systems has played a major role in encouraging auto manufacturers to think beyond in-house production, design, and development of many advanced vehicle components.'
Increasing Use of Semiconductors Alter Manufacturing Processes, Creating Opportunities for Allied System Designers and Suppliers
With semiconductor technology making a splash in the automotives markets, powertrain systems have gone from being simple mechanical fuel injection, valve lifting, and transmission systems to electronically controlled fuel injection, valve timing, and automatic transmission systems. Due to the incorporation of greater electronic content, the automobile market will have to alter its manufacturing process for almost every component and system. The changes to design, development, and implementation systems, as well as the complexity of system integration will warrant huge financial investments, which will ultimately tell on the cost of the final product. Despite the concerns of high price tags and ultimately, consumer acceptance, automakers are determined to make their vehicles technologically competent. They realize that they need to devise a way to offer world-class products at affordable rates, without wasting resources. 'By outsourcing their powertrain manufacturing requirements to a strategically allied supplier and designer, manufacturers can reduce their R&D costs and manufacturing time,' notes the analyst
