European Computerised Physician Order Entry Systems (CPOE) Markets
Frost & Sullivan, Aug 2007, Pages: 110
Need for Medication Effectiveness Boosts Demand for CPOE
In-patient markets will continue to play an important role in the adoption of computerised physician order entry systems (CPOE) across Europe. To a large extent, the European healthcare environment has evolved to become more receptive to adopting advanced clinical solutions, including CPOE. However, pockets of scepticism remain; the solution is regarded as being too invasive, changing key workflows and reducing operational flexibility. On the other hand, its multiple benefits, including the ability to improve medication effectiveness by providing clinical decision support during the prescription process, is driving the uptake of CPOE solutions in Europe.
'CPOE is an outstanding solution, with the power to make a significant difference in the healthcare arena,' states the analyst of this research. 'However, it is quite invasive and, therefore, requires the presence of other key solutions for it to really have a positive affect.' Accordingly, vendors will need to focus on training users and further customising their products. At the same time, CPOE needs to be implemented not simply as a clerical solution that dispatches and receives requests without intelligence. Such a narrow scope of implementation will dilute its value. Ultimately, the rising need to provide better quality care in a cost-effective manner, improve the effectiveness of medications, and enhance patient safety will promote the uptake of CPOE solutions.
Exceptional Decision Support Ability Promotes Uptake of CPOE Systems both as New Installations and Replacement Solutions
Key decision makers are turning to CPOE as a means to reduce medical errors, avoid adverse drug effects and improve patient care. CPOE has the ability to reduce or avoid medication errors by completely automating the process through reliance on robust clinical workflows. The system provides decision support at various points of care, regularises workflows and utilises digital data.
The market is experiencing growth from two perspectives; hospitals and primary care centres are purchasing CPOE as new solutions even as other customers are acquiring CPOE to replace existing resource management solutions. In addition, the integrated role between primary and secondary care is creating an urgent need for interoperability and information sharing. This situation, coupled with the fact that there is a clear and distinct need to reduce medical errors is boosting the popularity of CPOE systems. They are rapidly being identified as solutions that can integrate digital information and support a uniform physician-patient process that ensures the highest quality of medical treatment.
