Topical Hemostats and Tissue Sealants Battle it out for Market Supremacy

Topical hemostats and tissue sealants are assured of continued end-user interest due to their ability to improve the effectiveness of surgery and feasibility of minimally invasive surgery, as well as reduce complications and operating time. They also help prevent excess blood loss and aid reconstruction during surgical repair. However, these products are perennially locked in a battle for market dominance. While surgeons have shown a preference for topical hemostats for their lower costs, greater reliability, and established clinical record, there exist significant concerns regarding their use of animal source products. Sealants are exploiting this chink by lowering their prices and promoting their greater clinical benefits.

Tissue sealants have been chipping away at hemostats’ market shares but this progress may be curtailed since the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has tightened the approval process. If tissue sealants can win surgeons over with their efficacy, ease of use, and safety features, there could be a shift in balance. 'As acceptance of tissue sealants increases, topical hemostats will be forced to reposition their products in the market,' says the analyst of this research service. 'Education for end users and emphasis on the economic advantages of topical hemostats are likely to be key initiatives for retaining market share.'

Combination Hemostats Serve Complex Needs of Surgeons

Despite the maturity of several topical hemostats segments, the innovations in thrombin-based and combination topical hemostats could drive the market ahead. The rising complexities of surgeries have triggered a simultaneous urgency for topical hemostats to control bleeding. These products are particularly useful in burn and wound care and a wide range of surgeries including cardiothoracic, neurosurgery, spine, orthopedic, vascular, dermatology/plastic, and many others. The increasing popularity of minimally invasive procedures is also boosting demand for topical hemostats, encouraging the development of niche products and application devices.

'Combination topical hemostats are preferred for their broad surgical applications, rapid hemostasis, low preparation time, direct application to the bleeding site, and convenient storage,' notes the analyst. 'Although the price of combination products is higher than existing hemostats, they are significantly less expensive than tissue sealants.' The tissue sealant market will have to come up with a solution to their high prices if they are to survive the competition from hemostats. Although they provide satisfactory results, sealants may not achieve hemostasis comparable to topical hemostats. Education programs, new applications, and superior formulations are the way forward for the tissue sealants market.
