Leading Chinese Digital Cable STB Makers Development Strategies

In 2006, Chinas digital cable STB industry posted total shipment volume of approximately eight million units, representing an increase of 140% compared to 2005. Three vendors -DVN, Jiuzhou and Skyworth -accounted for around 55% of the industrys total shipments in 2006; however, in early 2007, DVN announced that it was withdrawing from the digital cable STB market. Recently, the MPEG-2 Alliance has begun to demand payment of royalties by Chinese STB makers, which may have a negative impact on the industrys development. As of 2007, the leading Chinese digital cable STB vendors included Coship, Jiuzhou, Skyworth, Haier, and Changhong. This report will examine the development and current status of these leading vendors.
