The linolenic acid has three kinds of double-bond unsaturated fatty acid. While hydrogen sulfide, it turns to oleic acid at first, and linoleic acid, and then stearic acid; it is easy to polymerize while heating up. Therefore, it has the performance fast to be dry. The linolenic acid is the necessary fatty acid for the animal in physiology, and it can be used in medicine, biology and chemical research as well.

Japan has made the law to regulate that many kinds of food should add ?-3PUFA, or it cannot be sold. The countries, such as Germany, have applied for the patent to take a-linolenic acid to be medicine or food additive to prevent the heart disease. WHO and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations stated that in view of the importance and common lack of ?-3PUFA among human beings, it is suggested that supply ?-3PUFA especially.

The research in China started in the beginning of 1990s, and it showed that the daily injection amount of a-linolenic acid of Chinese was less than 1g, the proposal amount of WHO after the investigation and calculation of a large amount of dietetics. Currently, the import milk powder raises the price by adding linolenic acid and linoleic acid in China, and the price is three times to the domestic milk powder with the same amount for babies, pregnant women and old people. Meanwhile, it is still in the preliminary period to contact and understand that adding linolenic acid, linoleic acid and other unsaturated fatty acid into the milk powder.

The polyunsaturated fatty acid market in China has shown its preliminary pattern. The polyunsaturated fatty acid mainly includes two categories, one is for decreasing lipoidemia and blood pressure, and preventing the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, such as deep sea fish oil; and the other is to increase intelligence, and improve the memory, such as Intelligence Aid etc.

In terms of food structure in China, the proportions of the animal fat and plant oil are equal. The animal fat provides the saturated fatty acid, while the plant oil provides the unsaturated fatty acid generally. In our daily life, a-linolenic acid is necessary. The food in the coastal area in China is rich in a-linolenic acid, while in the inland area, the diet is severely lack of a-linolenic acid. According to the investigation, the ratio of animal fat to plant oil is 20-30:1, far higher than 4-6:1, the nutrition standard put forward in China. Calculating as 1g of a-linolenic acid a day, and then at least 511 thousand tons will be required in China, so the market prospect is in great potential.
