This research service provides an in-depth analysis of the world wireless protocol analyzer market. It features revenue forecasts for all market segments from 2006 to 2013 as well as analyzes each market segment from an application, end-user and geographic perspective. A competitive analysis is also performed to highlight the key participants in each market segment.

Market Overview
Ongoing Technology and Standard Evolution Necessitating New Test Products and/or Upgrades

The introduction of new technologies and standards is expected to play a major role in the progress of the world wireless protocol analyzers (WPA) market, necessitating manufacturers and operators to equip their laboratories with the instrumentation they need to test these technologies. More specifically, the evolution of various wireless standards is expected to drive revenue growth and IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), long term evolution (LTE) and Mobile WiMax are expected to be the strongest growth drivers in the short term. To some extent, LTE requires a total change of test and measurement tools as the network architecture is expected to change significantly.

However, mergers and acquisitions (M&As) in the equipment manufacturers market have impacted and are expected to severely impact the equipment manufacturers end-user segment of both wireless protocol analyzer market segments, reducing it by about one-third in the long run. 'As such, the network operators end-user segment of the wireless protocol analyzer (monitoring and troubleshooting) market segment offers the most growth potential for vendors of WPAs,' notes the analyst of this research service. 'However, operators’ demand in this space is expected to move to network monitoring systems instead of protocol analyzers.'

Network Convergence and Related Complexity Drive the Need for Test Equipment

With the converged network becoming a reality, networks are not getting any simpler, especially with the introduction of technologies such as IMS both in the wireline and wireless space. There will be more interoperability issues, more complex media streams, scenarii, and so on and in addition, there is also the transition in the wireless space to IP. Hence service providers will need tools that are simple to use and help the troubleshooters make sure that the networks are operating perfectly. This driver is expected to have a high impact in the short term and its bearing is unlikely to reduce as these are long-term trends.

Overall, the world WPA market was relatively stable between 2005 and 2006, but registered only 0.6 percent revenue growth. Factors contributing to this include customers trying to reduce costs, M&As in the end-user markets, and the decline in the load stress generator and functional tester market segment. 'While load stress generators and functional testers represented the greatest part of the total revenues for wireless protocol analyzers in 2006, the revenue share of wireless protocol analyzers for monitoring and troubleshooting has been growing steadily,' says the analyst. 'In the future, the share of the wireless protocol analyzers for monitoring and troubleshooting segment is expected to continue to increase and in 2013, this segment is likely to represent 54.1 percent of the total revenues.'
