IP-based Communication Services Gaining Prominence

Carriers and service providers in Latin America have been extensively migrating to next-generation network infrastructure, even as the regions’ telecommunications sector continues to grow strongly, surpassing the overall economic growth of the region. Since 2003, infrastructure investments in telecom networks have increased consistently, enabling the impressive uptake of mobile, IP-based data communication services, and broadband Internet access services. Convergence of carrier and enterprise networks is also under way, and during the next six years, networks will unite the various voice-centric applications and in an IP environment, virtually all applications are likely to demand computer-telephone integration.

However, quality of service (QoS), security, and bandwidth management are some of the key challenges to the convergence trend. In the short term, these issues are likely to restrain the widespread deployment of IP-based enterprise voice services. End users are used to the guaranteed QoS offered by telephone networks and might find the QoS offered by IP networks unsatisfactory. 'Delivering hosted IP and other next-generation voice services involves the use of enterprise local area network (LAN) and carriers' IP networks,' notes the analyst of this research service. 'Managing service quality in this architecture becomes a challenge for service providers and could be major factor in the eventual acceptance of IP-based services.'

Small- and Medium-Sized Business Sector Offers Significant Opportunities

Considering that they account for between 25 and 35 percent of the total production of goods and services in Latin America, small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are a lucrative end-user segment for providers of hosted IP and next-generation enterprise voice services. During the last couple of years, SMBs have been increasing their ICT budgets by 15 percent year-over-year and the total ICT investments of SMBs are expected to surpass the enterprise segment in 2009. Regarding ICT investment, SMBs allocate 47 percent of their budgets in hardware, 37 percent in services, and 16 percent in software.

Although these trends provide a baseline of the revenue opportunities for hosted IP and other next-generation enterprise voice services, the SMB segment is underserved in Latin America with respect to telecommunication. Customers generally do not have the bandwidth, geographic location, or budget to contract telecom services with alternative high-capacity fiber providers and instead, generally rely on services delivered over the incumbent carriers’ local loop, either by the incumbent or by competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs) or local service providers leasing the network.

'Overall, the Latin American hosted IP and next-generation enterprise voice services market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 66.0 percent between 2006 and 2012,' says the analyst. 'Frost & Sullivan expects this market to grow from $37.0 million in 2006 to $ 775.8 million in 2012 (not considering revenues from Managed IP PBX services).'
