This industry comprises establishments primarily engaged in manufacturing wood products (except establishments operating sawmills and preservation facilities; establishments manufacturing veneer, engineered wood products, millwork, wood containers, pallets, and wood container parts; and establishments making manufactured homes (i.e., mobile homes) and prefabricated buildings and components). The All Other Wood Product Manufacturing Industry produces miscellaneous wood products, which includes wooden ladders, dowels, handles, toilet seats, kitchenware, toothpicks, canes, tobacco pipes, shoe heels, etc, which are not classified in any other US industry. The raw materials required to manufacture such products (i.e. mostly wood) are purchased from sawmills/planing mills, veneer, plywood and engineered wood product manufacturers as well as millwork enterprises. The products made by this industry are sold to wholesalers, retailers or export markets.

Introduction

Weighing Up the Competition

This industry supplies downstream industries with pallets and containers to store and transport these consumer and industrial goods. Containers weight and volume is expected to decline over this period as slow boats and ships will be replaced by high speed transoceanic vessels and airplanes in intercontinental freight. This means lighter weight materials, such as plastic, fiberglass and paperboard are likely to offer substantial competition to this industry.
