Introduction

Universal Corporation (Universal) is a global leaf tobacco company. It supplies leaf tobacco to the manufacturers of cigarettes, cigars, and other tobacco products. During 20062007, the company underwent a transformation and sold its non-tobacco operations (lumber, building, and agro-products businesses) in order to focus its activities on its core business of leaf tobacco.

Highlights

The company operates through three reportable segments: North America (comprising flue-cured and burley tobacco operations), Other regions (comprising South America, Africa, Europe, and Asia), and Other tobacco operations (comprising dark tobacco business, oriental tobacco joint venture, and certain other services). In August 2007, Universal entered into a $400 million credit agreement with Wachovia Bank. The maturity date of the credit agreement is August 31, 2012. Five multinational companies; Philip Morris, Japan Tobacco, Imperial Tobacco, British American Tobacco, and House of Prince represented as much as 80% of the companys business, in 2007.
