World DC-DC Converter Markets
Frost & Sullivan, Dec 2007, Pages: 113
Prolific Use of Electronics across Several Verticals Stimulate Global Demand for DC-DC Converters
The growth in end-user markets such as telecom, industrial, and medical markets is significantly driving the world DC-DC converter market. Currently, the telecommunications end-user market holds the highest share for the DC-DC converter market. This market is expected to show steady future growth as well due to the number of applications being developed, fueled by innovations in end-user technology such as design of 3G and 4G systems, increasing usage of mobile phones, general packet radio service (GPRS), voice over internet protocol (VoIP), and power over Ethernet (PoE). In addition, the medical end-user segment is also witnessing sturdy growth driven by the implementation of hand-held devices for diagnostics and medical imaging equipment.
Devices in telecom and medical applications are designed with increasing dependence on electronics to make them compact and portable. As these devices require DC supply to operate, there has been a considerable increase in the demand for point-of-load (POL) converters, which are compact, cost-effective, and more efficient than convenient designs. 'The market is expected to grow with the continuing expansion of manufacturing facilities in Asia Pacific to reduce cost of production, which is likely to further drive this market,' says the analyst of this research service. 'In addition, digital devices are also making inroads into industrial applications.'
New and Improved Designs of DC-DC Converters Encourage Increased Usage
Although the telecommunications market has been growing steadily due to advances in mobile phone applications, PoE, and VoIP systems, there tends to be a lag between the development of end-user technologies and the converter technologies. While this makes technology obsolete, it also reduces the returns on investment. With most customers looking to adapt to these changes, DC-DC vendors are finding it increasingly difficult to keep up with the changing designs and requirements.
Hence, several vendors are starting to focus on research and development of DC-DC converter methods and topology to increase the usage of DC-DC converters over AC-DC power source in telecommunication sector and medical imaging devices. 'Many participants have formed alliances to improve the technology and quality of the power supply,' observes the analyst. 'This has started to bridge the gap between the adoption rates as well.' With standardization of DC-DC products, the market has also started witnessing increasing growth in volume and in sales.
