Enterprise mobility solution vendors continue focusing on innovative technology in order to garner a larger share of the available market in light of heavy competition. The enterprises adopting mobile technology are, themselves, challenged to provide their employees with the best solutions available but cannot change from one wireless email solution provider to another all the time. Therefore, they need to make a decision based on current and anticipated offerings from the major mobility solution vendors.

Market Overview
Growth in Number of Mobile Workers Driving Demand for Enterprise Mobile Solutions

The total worldwide addressable market of mobile workers currently stands at 375 million - an opportunity no one can possibly ignore. This number is expected to grow significantly over the coming years as more workers become educated about the use of wireless technology in their daily life. While most people still get a mobile phone to make phone calls, most enterprises acquire wireless handsets to enable wireless e-mail and, subsequently, mobile applications. Furthermore, there is now a socio-psychological acceptance by most workers that it is prestigious to have a handheld device such as a BlackBerry or Treo with wireless e-mail.

In view of the increasing competition, enterprise mobility solution vendors continue focusing on innovative technologies in order to garner a larger share of the available market. 'The enterprises adopting mobile technology are themselves challenged to provide their employees with the best solutions available, but cannot change from one wireless e-mail solution provider to another all the time,' notes the analyst of this research service. 'Therefore, they need to make a decision based on current and anticipated offerings from the major mobility solution vendors.'

Security and Features and Functionality Perceived to be Most Important to Users

As enterprise mobility solutions gain higher adoption levels and popularity, CIOs are looking closely at critical decision making elements. Frost & Sullivan’s survey found that that security and features and functionality are most important to users followed by the other parameters (usability was not included in this survey question). For wireless messaging, important requirements include real-time push sync and full sync of all personal information management (PIM) tools. The importance of a rich user interface is becoming clear, as an increasing number of enterprises adopt wireless enterprise solutions, usability and dependability on these solutions increase. Applications should be able to seamlessly interplay with each other to reduce down time and increase operational productivity of the solutions.

Going forward, it is estimated that there will be 3.5 billion mobile users globally by the end of 2010. Although market penetration has surpassed 70 percent in developed regions, penetration levels are under 30 percent in developing regions such as China and India. Furthermore, most mobile users recycle their phone in an average of 18 months and sale of new handsets constitutes approximately 50 percent of the entire installed base. 'As the installed base of subscribers in the developing regions continues to grow, there will be a substantial amount of people for whom the introduction to the Internet and e-mail will be through their mobile phones,' says the analyst. 'The question remains - who can get them to use this first?'
