Executive Summary
Slovenia is a small but relatively wealthy country, located in Central Southern Europe. A part of Yugoslavia prior to 1991, Slovenia escaped from the collapse of that country virtually untouched by violence and ethnic warfare. In other respects as well, the country more closely resembles its Western neighbours rather than other former Communist states; demographic indicators are more in line with Western than Eastern Europe, and income levels are comparable with those found in southern parts of the European Union. The country is not as oversupplied with hospital beds and specialist doctors as other Central European states, but primary care still lags behind Western European standards.
The Slovenian medical device market is thus relatively advanced, if small. Slovenian medical care is generally the best in Eastern Europe, spurred on by the early introduction, in 1992, of a universal healthcare insurance system. The country has a sizeable domestic industry at the low to medium end of the technology scale, although a little advanced equipment is manufactured locally.
The country's wealth and EU accession make the market an important one, both in its own right and as a gateway to other markets in Eastern Europe and the Balkans. Slovenia joined the EU in 2004, following the conclusion of negotiations at the Copenhagen summit in 2002. Renewed economic growth over the past couple of years, should lead to a steady improvement in the market. Slovenia imports most of its medical devices, and has a large number of distributors, among whom competition is fierce. There are a large number of small, private distributors, although the most important ones tend to be larger, formerly public, companies. Since Slovenia was once part of Yugoslavia, many distributors retain links with other former Yugoslav states.
