Smithfield Foods’ (Smithfield) core strategy is to capitalize on its vertically integrated business model in pork production and processing, to sell more value added products, and to expand its geographic reach.

The Company conducts its business through five reporting segments: pork, beef, international, hog production, and ’other’, each of which comprises a number of subsidiaries. In September 2007, Smithfield increased pork production at its Sioux City, Iowa plant to produce pork to be shipped to China.

In November 2007, the American Meat Institute (AMI) recognized 63 of Smithfield’s facilities across 26 US states for their significant environmental efforts in their local communities during the 2006.

Five facilities were awarded Environmental Achievement Award which recognizes environmental stewardship by companies that exceed AMIs compliance requirements in five categories: resource conservation; pollution prevention; upgrades to improve environmental sustainability; environmental outreach to the public and environmental training programs.
