Return on Investment for Video on Demand: Cable and Adsl VOD in Europe
Datamonitor, Dec 2002
Introduction: This report provides ROI analysis of video on demand in Europe for broadband cable and Adsl service providers in 7 individual European geographies. Already operators such as BSkyB in the UK and numerous cable operators are trialing broadband and VOD services making this report vital reading. Commercial VOD launches will occur as market conditions improve over the next three years and operators look beyond basic digital TV to raise Arpu. Scope: * Forecasts of potential roll out and uptake to 2006 with full forecasts of costs and revenues for 7 major European countries by cable and DSL * Competitive analysis of potential major cable, satellite, DSL and fibre based VOD services in each major Western European national market to 2006 * Forecasts of capital expenditure required to roll out VOD as well as forecasts of operational and content costs for cable and DSL in each country * Forecasts of both annual and cumulative ROI for potential VOD services on cable as well as Adsl by satellite, telco and standalone operators. Report Highlights: 1) By 2006 the European VOD market will have a cumulative negative ROI. 2) Cable will be the only platform to achieve a slight positive ROI by 2006. 3) Total VOD revenues will be $3.8bn in 2006, with PPV accounting for 63% of combined cable and Adsl VOD revenues. VOD deployments remain niche in Europe and are offered by standalone providers in a few select countries. The first year of large-scale VOD deployments will be 2004, when rollout will take place on all major platforms. Digital cable operators have failed to rollout VOD as part of their triple-play strategy because of high levels of debt, delaying two-way digitization, and due to the ongoing consolidation in the cable industry. Adsl VOD will not generate a positive ROI by 2006 for the vast majority of providers, except in the Nordics. Reasons to Purchase: * Discover the radically different paths VOD development will take in each European broadcast market * VOD is expensive to roll out and revenue models are unproven. Use this report's ROI analysis to review the evolving pay-TV business models * For the first time understand where VOD fits in the business models for major cable, satellite and telco operators in Europe * Understand when, why and how certain VOD business models become viable as the new service investment appetite returns and which ones will fail by 2006.
