WiMAX activity has exploded over the last 12 months. It is likely that WiMAX patent filings and grants will more than double over the next two years, achieving Bluetooth’s epic proportions.

WiMAX is a standardized, wireless technology designed to offer connectivity in a metropolitan area network (MAN). Prior to the emergence of WiMAX, proprietary technologies such as LMDS and MMDS occupied this segment, with varying degrees of success due to lack of client device installations, high base station costs, and the general barrier-to-market-entry encumbering all proprietary solutions in a new market.

The intellectual property development of WiMAX and its cousin WiBRO is to a large extent dominated by Samsung. One can even go so far as to assume that Samsung opted to commercialize WiBRO in response to an inability to gain momentum behind its network architecture proposals in the IEEE WiMAX groups. Given the inevitable rise of Samsung into a position equal to the Sony of yesteryear, it would be wise for companies to keep a close watch on WiBRO and refraining from dismissing that architecture as a reactionary offshoot. It is quite likely that WiBRO will become the dominant mobile WiMAX standard of the future. Samsung’s strength is its ability to smoothly adapt to shifting market conditions with a constant focus on increasing sales, and growing to a dominant market position.
