Statistics: Fibre Consumption for Technical Textiles in the USA - 2008 Edition
Textiles Intelligence, March 2008, Pages: 18
The volume of fibre consumed in the manufacture of finished products in the USA fell again in 2006—the latest year for which comprehensive data are available—having fallen every year since 2002. The drop in 2006 amounted to 958 mn lb and brought total fibre usage down to 12,594 mn lb, 7.1% lower than in 2005.
In terms of fibre type, synthetic filament yarn usage suffered the largest decline, at 436 mn lb, followed closely by synthetic staple fibre, which fell by 414 mn lb. More moderate declines were witnessed in the consumption of cotton, which fell by 93 mn lb, and cellulosic filament yarn, which was down by just 17 mn lb on the previous year. At the same time, there was a minimal increase in the consumption of wool, which went up by 2 mn lb, and a negligible 1 mn lb rise in cellulosic staple fibre usage.
In non-industrial end uses, fibre consumption in floor coverings fell by the biggest amount—325 mn lb, to 4,230 mn lb—thanks entirely to a decline in synthetics usage. The second largest decline was witnessed in apparel, where consumption was down by 289 mn lb, or 8.9%. Again, this was due largely to drops in synthetics usage. Meanwhile, fibre usage in home textiles was down by 223 mn lb, or 15%, led by a decline in cotton consumption.
Fibre consumption in industrial uses was down by 121 mn lb, or 2.8%. The decline was due to a drop in synthetics usage, as consumption of cotton and cellulosics grew. In terms of end use, fibrefill, stuffing and flock constituted the largest application, followed by medical, surgical and sanitary, and unallocated nonwovens. However, of the 17 end use applications examined in this report, the only substantial rise in fibre usage was in unallocated nonwovens. In five others, increases were minimal. Moreover, there were significant drops in fibre consumption for medical, surgical and sanitary applications, tyres, miscellaneous applications, belting, transportation fabrics, and sewing thread.
