Leading Carbon Fiber Producers: A Financial Analysis and Positioning

The global carbon fiber industry in 2007 is experiencing a significant resurgence due to increasing demand for the technology within a wide range of applications. Driven by demand for carbon fiber and advanced composite materials from the industrial, aerospace, sporting goods, and, increasingly, wind energy industries, competitors in the marketplace continue to manoeuvre strategically to take advantage of the current supply constraints and establish long-term relationships with selected customers, often, at pre-set prices.
Noted characteristics of the composite materials industry are its capital-intensive nature and long product development and qualification cycles. While striving to meet demand over the next 6-12 months, virtually all of the world’s carbon fiber producers are also attempting to forecast demand through 2010 and beyond, while simultaneously considering the addition and geographic placement of new production capacity. While these companies address long-term production issues and establish positions in selected industries (e.g., Zoltek in the wind energy sector), each company’s current financial and economic positions are of great interest to industry observers, particularly the investment community.
