Evolving Regulatory Framework and Stringent Emission Standards Driving Market Growth

The European powertrain market is expected to benefit from the increasingly stringent emission norms for passenger cars and light vehicles laid down by the evolving regulatory framework of the European Union’s EURO standards. With the broader purpose of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the European Union has, over the past decade since 1995, implemented and upgraded automobile emission standards. These standards have increasingly been stringent as regards the upper limit for the amount of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxide and particulate matter, in addition to carbon dioxide. These environmental concerns and ever-increasing regulatory pressures are expected to have a greater influence on the growth and development of the European powertrain market in the years running up to 2020.

Continuously variable transmissions (CVT) however, have consistently faced bottlenecks regarding technological reliability concerns and operational consistency. For example, with the CVT, the reliability of the chain drive has been relatively unsatisfactory, leading to failures of many transmissions. 'End consumers are also of the opinion that the shifting quality of automated manuals is poor,' notes the analyst of this research service. 'Automated manual transmissions are known to be jerky and vehicle manufacturers and suppliers are working towards smoothening the shifting procedure in terms of gear-shifting and clutch engagement.'

Tax Credits and Fiscal Incentives Expected to Increase the Installation of Diesel Particulate Filters in Europe

Regional government initiatives have influenced the penetration of diesel engine vehicles in the European Union to a large extent. Prominent among them are the tax incentives and benefits offered on diesel vehicles equipped with diesel particulate filters (DPFs), which are able to satisfy the emission norms well ahead of their introduction. Incentives in Germany added up to €600 on costs of vehicles equipped with DPFs in 2004. Similarly, in France, vehicles equipped with these systems were eligible for an incentive of up to €800. Although the incentive amount has reduced by about 10 to 20 per cent, it has helped achieve high installation rates for diesel particulate filters in the European passenger cars and light vehicles market.

'The European powertrain market is expected to witness a lot of merger and acquisition activity at the Tier 2 supplier level in order to ease the pricing pressure exerted by the high bargaining power of Tier 1 suppliers and original equipment manufacturers,' says the analyst. 'Also, due to the current slow down in the United States, which is the world’s largest automotive market, a lot of suppliers are expected to shift production bases to Asia Pacific or acquire their Asia Pacific counterparts in order to cut down on production costs.'

This Frost & Sullivan research service titled European Powertrain Market – Investment Analysis provides Financial Benchmarking Analysis of the market by using segment opportunity scorecard, company scorecard, M&As in the European Powertrain market and asset management scorecard for select powertrain companies.
