Textiles and apparel are key manufacturing sectors in Sri Lanka. Between them they accounted for over 43% of the country’s total exports and for more than 56% of its industrial exports in 2007. They also accounted for 39% of total industrial output in value terms, based on data for 2006, and for about 75% of jobs in manufacturing when indirect employment in related sectors is taken into account.

The success of the textile and apparel industry can be attributed partly to the Sri Lankan government’s policy of attracting foreign investment by offering—through the Board of Investment (BOI)—a number of special incentives including special industrial zones, tax holidays and import duty exemptions. The industry, for its part, has gained a reputation among buyers for quality, on-time deliveries and customer service. Importantly, its reputation also extends to ethical and environmentally friendly practices, and good working conditions. These attributes have attracted buyers from names such as Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, C&A, Calvin Klein, Chantelle Group, Columbia, Gap, Gloria Vanderbilt, Intimissimi, Lands’ End, Marks & Spencer, Next, Old Navy, Polo Ralph Lauren, Sainsbury, The Limited, and Victoria’s Secret.

Of the five companies profiled in this report, Brandix Lanka has the only state-of-the-art five pocket jeans factory in Sri Lanka. Its focus is on Levi’s 501 jeans, although it also manufactures for other well known names. MAS Linea Aqua is dedicated entirely to swimwear. The company is a joint venture between MAS Holdings, Speedo International and Brandot International. Noyon Lanka knits fashion lace products for leading brands, and is unique in South Asia. The company is a joint venture between Noyon Dentelle de Calais and MAS Holdings. Stevensons Lanka, a joint venture between Brandix Lanka, Lanka Equities, and Stevensons Ltd, has built a state-of-the-art eco-friendly dyehouse. Textured Jersey Lanka is a weft knit fabric joint venture between Pacific Textiles of Hong Kong and Brandix Lanka. Pacific Textiles manufactures weft and warp knitted fabric in China while Brandix Lanka is one of Sri Lanka’s two biggest garment makers.
