Thought Leader Insight & Analysis: Osteoporosis
Medpredict, Feb 2008, Pages: 128
Completing the 10th full year of ongoing discussions with the publisher’s Osteoporosis Thought Leader Panel, this analysis was derived from seven interviews with North American (5) and European (2) osteoporosis thought leaders. These conversations took place November 2007 – February 2008.
We are experiencing a seismic event in the treatment of osteoporosis. The first question being asked of any new product now is “How is this better than alendronate?” Panelists provide insight into the cross currents of efficacy, safety, convenience and cost to help predict who will survive, and who will thrive in this maturing market. Among the issues that the Panel debates are:
- Reimbursement: DEXA, Reclast/Aclasta, Boniva, denosumab, anabolics - Is “40% greater BMD” meaningful? Is a non-vert claim necessary? - What are the real safety concerns with bisphosphonates, and do these carry over to other antiresorptives? Gastrointestinal? Arthralgia? ONJ? Infection? - How should osteoporosis drugs be sequenced? - Is there anything wrong with once-daily therapy? - Anabolics: PTH or calcilytic? Anti-sclerostin or anti-DKK1? - Should we abandon SERMs?
