Overview ion-mask, a water repellent treatment from the company P2i, has won the Functional Sportswear category in the 2008 ISPO Brand New Awards.
P2i, based in the UK, was established in 2004 to commercialise liquid-repellent treatments developed by the UK’s Ministry of Defence. As such, the treatment was first developed to protect soldiers from chemical attack. However, it can now be applied to a wide range of products in the performance textiles, filtration and bio-consumable markets.
ion-mask utilises an ionised gas, or “plasma”, to apply a protective layer which is only nanometres thick to the entire surface of an item.
This layer is molecularly bound to the surface and will not leach away. The treatment transforms the surface of the product so that it has a low surface energy and is able to shed water effectively. However, as it is only nanometres thick, the other properties of the product remain unchanged.
The treatment is particularly effective on footwear which contains synthetic material. In this application, it can be used on the external and internal surfaces of the shoe, as well as between and around the individual fibres.
