vision & mission statement

The Annual Review of High Performance Coaching and Consulting is an international, peer-reviewed, scholarly journal focused on the transfer of knowledge, understanding and skills from one domain (e.g., sport) to another (e.g., business), especially with regard to communication, motivation, leadership, talent identification and management, team building, organisational behaviour, and performance psychology. Ethical and marketing issues will be a priority. The mission of the journal is to bridge the gap between academic, professional and lay discourse on coaching and consulting. The journal encourages the submission of original research, case studies, 'state-of-the-art' reviews, advocacy pieces, and theory-driven reflections on practice. The review process of the Annual Review of High Performance Coaching and Consulting is 'open,' which means that both authors and reviewers know each other's identity; and acknowledgment of the reviewers' work is footnoted on the first page of each article. This process has proved successful for both the International Journal of Sports Science and Coaching and the Annual Review of Golf Coaching.

SIMON JENKINS

Dr Simon Jenkins is a Principal Lecturer in Sports Coaching in the Carnegie Faculty of Education and Sport at Leeds Metropolitan University, UK. He is the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of the Annual Review of High Performance Coaching and Consulting, the International Journal of Sports Science and Coaching, and the Annual Review of Golf Coaching. He is also author of Sports Science Handbook: The Essential Guide to Kinesiology, Sport and Exercise Science. His career in providing coaching and consultancy began in earnest as a caddie on the PGA European Tour. Beyond golf, he spent three years at Pepperdine University developing a life skills program for NCAA Division 1 student-athletes. Simon has a B.Sc. in Sports Science from Brighton Polytechnic and a Doctorate in Experimental Psychology from the University of Oxford.

ROSS ANDERSON

Ross Anderson is the Program Director of the Mount Eliza Executive Education programme in the Melbourne Business School at the University of Melbourne, Australia. He is a registered psychologist, an executive coach, and an experienced designer, developer and facilitator of leadership development initiatives in a broad range of organisations. After two years as an industrial psychologist in the brewing industry, Ross spent twenty five years in private practice as a psychologist and a rehabilitation provider. During this time, he became an expert in trauma, training and managing a network of psychologists attending industrial and transport accidents and crime scenes. He has a B.Sc. degree in Psychology from the University of Melbourne and a Graduate Diploma in Educational Counselling from RMIT University.
KURT APRIL

Dr. Kurt April is a Professor in the Graduate School of Business at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. He holds a number of other academic positions, including Associate Fellow of the Säid Business School at the University of Oxford. He is Managing Director of LICM, a company operating globally and specialising in Leadership, Inclusion, Coaching and Mentoring. He is also a Senior Associate of Performance Through Inclusion, which emphasizes inclusion by transforming diversity from a minority driven cause into an opportunity for all people. He is author of e or b e@ten: E-business Redefining the Corporate Landscape and co-author of Performance Through Leadership: Knowledge Management in Practice. From the University of Cape Town, Kurt earned undergraduate and Masters degrees in electrical engineering, an MBA, and a Doctorate in IT Strategy.

ED BATISTA

Ed Batista is a Leadership Coach in the Center for Leadership Development and Research in the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University, USA. He spent fifteen years managing and launching non-profit organisations. As an executive coach and a change management consultant, he strives to help individuals find professional fulfilment by helping organisations adapt their management practice and organizational culture to better fit their changing needs. Much of his work has involved helping organisations use technology to be more effective, based on the premise that human factors are more important than technical issues in determining the success of any technology implementation. Ed earned a B.A. in History from Brown University and a MBA from Stanford University.

STEVEN BERGLAS

Dr. Steven Berglas is an executive coach and management consultant who spent twenty-five years on the faculty of Harvard Medical School¹s Department of Psychiatry and had a private psychotherapy practice in Boston prior to relocating to Los Angeles in 2000. He is author of Reclaiming the Fire: How Successful People Overcome Burnout, which was honoured by Fortune Magazine as one of the 75 Smartest Business Books ever written, and The Success Syndrome: Hitting Bottom When You Reach the Top. His seminal views on executive coaching appear in the lead article of the June 2002 edition of the Harvard Business Review. Steven holds a B.A. in psychology from Clark University, a Ph.D. from Duke University, and did postdoctoral training in social psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

DIANA BILIMORIA

Dr. Diana Bilimoria is an Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior in the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University, Ohio, USA. She has served as an organisational consultant and management educator for private, public and non-profit organizations; and as an executive coach for individuals. She focuses on the areas of leadership development, emotional intelligence, board effectiveness, gender and diversity in organizations, and organisation development. She is co-editor of The Handbook of Women in Business and Management and was the Editor of the Journal of Management Education (1997-2000). Diana holds a Bachelor of Commerce and a Master of Management Studies from the University of Bombay, India; and a Ph.D. in Business Administration from the University of Michigan.

CHRIS BRADY

Dr. Chris Brady is the Dean of the Business School at Bournemouth University. He worked in the Royal Navy for 16 years and served as the head of the watch in the joint HQ intelligence cells during the first Gulf War and the Balkans crisis. Having played, coached and managed football (soccer) at a semi-professional level throughout his working life, he was coach of the national military football team during his time in the Royal Navy and is a UEFA 'A' License Coach. He teaches on the Football Association (FA)'s pro-license management course and is co-author of a number of books including The 90 Minute Manager: Lessons from the Dugout. Chris holds a B.Ed. in English and Sociology from the University of London, and a M.Sc. and a Ph.D. in International Relations from the University of Southampton.

HEIDI BROOKS

Dr. Heidi Brooks is a Lecturer in Organizational Behavior and Director of the Leadership Development Program at the Yale School of Management, USA. She is also a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the Yale School of Medicine. Previously she was the Assistant Director of the Center for Family Enterprises at the Kellog School of Management at Northwestern University, where she focused on leadership development in established family firms. She was also an executive coach for high-level leaders in Fortune 500 companies, academic institutions and non-profit organisations. Heidi holds an undergraduate degree from Brown University and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.

KIM CAMERON

Dr. Kim Cameron is Professor of Management and Organizations in the Steven M. Ross School of Business and is also a Professor of Higher Education in the School of Education at the University of Michigan, USA. He is one of the Co-Founders of the Center for Positive Organizational Scholarship, which is concerned with understanding how to enable human excellence in organizations. He is co-author of numerous books including Developing Management Skills; Diagnosing and Changing Organizational Culture; Leading with Values: Positivity, Virtues and High Performance; and Making the Impossible Possible: Leading Extraordinary Performance: The Rocky Flats Story. Kim has a B.S. in Sociology and M.S. in Social Psychology from Brigham Young University, and a M.A. and Ph.D. in Administrative Sciences from Yale University.

ALLEN FOX

Dr. Allen Fox is a tennis coach, who works with top players in the USA. His tennis-playing career was marked by reaching the Quarter Finals at Wimbledon in 1965, winning the Canadian National Singles Championship, and playing in three Davis Cup matches. He spent four years working as an investment banker in NYSE member firms, four years as manager of a private investment company, and nine years as partner in a speciality retail bakery chain. He returned to tennis and spent seventeen years as Head Coach at Pepperdine University. He is author of a number of books on tennis and competition psychology including If I'm the Better Player, Why Can't I Win; and The Winner's Mind: A Competitor's Guide to Sports and Business Success. From the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), Allen holds an undergraduate degree in Physics and a Ph.D. in Psychology.

CHRISTINA GEITHNER

Dr. Christina Geithner is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Exercise Science at Gonzaga University, USA. A member of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), she is an ACSM Health/Fitness Instructor®. Having been a member of U.S. Diving, Inc. Talent Identification Committee (1991-2004), she was also a consultant for a system to be used in selecting U.S. Olympic Team members for the Beijing Games. She facilitates team building and leadership courses for graduate students and corporate groups in business, accounting and organisational leadership. Christina has a B.S. in Health, Physical Education and Recreation from West Chester State College, specialising in Recreational Outdoor Pursuits Education; a M.A. in Physical Education from the University of Maryland; and Ph.D. in Kinesiology from the University of Texas at Austin.

SARAH GILMORE

Dr. Sarah Gilmore is a Senior Lecturer in Human Resources Management in the Portsmouth Business School at the University of Portsmouth, UK. Prior to pursuing a career in higher education, she gained extensive experience in the HR, HRD and employee relations fields through consultancy and previous employment experience as a National Officer for one of Europe's leading trade unions. Her research explores the ways in which diverse industries and companies seek to create and sustain high performance. Sarah has a B.A. in English and European Literature from the University of Essex, a Postgraduate Diploma in Personnel Management from the University of Portsmouth, a M.Sc. in Theoretical Psychoanalytic Studies from University College London, and a Ph.D. in Business and Management from the University of Portsmouth.

CLIVE GILSON

Dr. Clive Gilson holds the Chair in Human Resource Management in the Department of Strategic Management and Leadership at the Waikato Management School at the University of Waikato, New Zealand. He is a founder Director of Inspiros Worldwide Ltd. and a Director of Peak Performance Worldwide, Saatchi and Saatchi. He is co-author of the best-selling business book, Peak Performing Organisations: Inspirational Business Lessons from the World's Top Sports Organizations. In 1994, he received the David L. Bradford Award as Outstanding Management Educator in North America from the Organizational Behavior Teaching Society. Following a B.A. in Business Studies from Middlesex University, Clive completed M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Industrial Relations at the University of Warwick.

JAMES HUNT

Dr. James M. Hunt is an Associate Professor of Management at Babson College, MA, USA, where is also the Chair of the Management Division, the Charles Barton Term Chair holder, and Faculty Co-Director of the Coaching for Leadership and Teamwork Program. He has consulted with numerous corporations and health care organizations throughout the USA. He is co-author of The Coaching Manager: Developing Top Talent in Business and The Coaching Organization: A Strategy for Developing Leaders. With co-author Joseph Weintraub, his paper 'Learning Developmental Coaching' received the 'Best Paper in Management Development Award' from the Academy of Management in 1999. James has a B.S. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a M.S.W. from Simmons College, and a D.B.A. from Boston University.

STEVE JACKSON

Steve Jackson is Managing Director of mypeakpotential, Ltd., London, UK, which is an organisational development consultancy that specialises in leadership development using the outdoors as a learning medium. The partners of mypeakpotential, Ltd. are former members of British Army special-forces units. Steve is a former Captain in the Royal Navy who rose from the ranks of Ordinary Seaman. He has led climbing expeditions all over the world, including Kangchenjunga in Nepal. Ironically his working life began underground, as a Nottinghamshire coal miner. In the 1980s he led expeditions to Mount Kenya and Bolivia with Dr James Milledge that conducted extensive medical research into high-altitude physiology and was an adviser to the Army Everest West Ridge Expedition 2006.

JULIE JOHNSON

Julie Johnson is President and Founder of The Reid Group, USA, a consulting firm specialising in leadership development of high-potential employees, woman leaders and senior executives. Focusing on emotional intelligence, management style and organisational change, she has coached many of America's most successful women in business. She has been involved in a number of women's initiatives and organisations, including the International Women's Forum. For two decades prior to founding The Reid Group, she held human resources management positions in the corporate world and also at the Stanford Law School. Julie holds a B.A. in Liberal Arts from Carnegie Mellon University, an M.A. in Social Psychology and Counseling from Southern Methodist University, and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

JEAN-FRANÇOIS MANZONI

Dr. Jean-François Manzoni is Professor of Leadership and Organizational Development at IMD (Lausanne, Switzerland). His research, teaching, consulting and coaching activities are focused on the management of change at the individual and organizational levels. He is co-author of a number of books including Performance Measurement and Management Control: Superior Organizational Performance and The Set-Up to Fail Syndrome: How Good Managers Cause Great People to Fail, which received the 2003 Book of the Year award from the Society for Human Resource Management. Jean-François earned a B.Comm. from Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales de Montréal, a M.B.A. from McGill University and a D.B.A from Harvard Business School.

AIMEE MULLINS

Aimee Mullins is an actress, fashion model and President of the Women's Sports Foundation (2007-2009). She is on the board of directors for Just One Break, Inc., a not-for-profit organisation that is dedicated to supporting and increasing employment of people with disabilities. In 1996 Paralympics, she set world records for leg amputees in the 100m, 200m and Long Jump. In 2007, she was named as one of Self magazine's '10 Most Inspiring Women'. Aimee received a full academic scholarship from the US Department of Defense to attend Georgetown University, where she earned an undergraduate degree with majors in history and diplomacy. While at Georgetown, she also won a place on the Foreign Affairs internship program working at The Pentagon under Joint Chiefs of Staff, Colin Powell.

BRUCE PELTIER

Dr. Bruce Peltier is Professor of Psychology and Ethics in the School of Dentistry at the University of the Pacific in San Francisco, USA. He is a former President of the American Society for Dental Ethics. A private practice psychologist, management consultant and executive coach, he is also the author of The Psychology of Executive Coaching: Theory and Application. He has served as a Research Assistant at Stanford University using experimental methods to study career decision-making patterns. Following an undergraduate degree in Engineering at the US Military Academy at West Point, Bruce earned a M.Ed. in Psychology, while serving in the military in West Berlin, and a Ph.D. in Counseling from Wayne State University; and a MBA from the Eberhardt School of Business at Georgetown University.

GIANPIERO PETRIGLIERI

Dr. Gianpiero Petriglieri is Affiliate Professor of Organizational Behaviour at INSEAD in Paris, where he teaches a leadership course on the MBA programme and contributes to executive education programmes. He is also a Visiting Professor at CBS Executive, Copenhagen Business School, Denmark, and is consultant to a range of international organisations in the design and implementation of programs for developing effective and responsible leaders. Gianpiero received his Medical Doctorate from the University of Catania Medical School, Italy, followed by a specialization in Psychiatry from the same university. He also holds a diploma in Advanced Organisational Consultation from the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations in London.

BARRY POSNER

Dr. Barry Posner is the Dean of the Leavey School of Business and a Professor of Leadership at Santa Clara University, California, USA. He is co-author of the best-selling book The Leadership Challenge and a number of other award-winning books including Credibility: How Leaders Gain and Lose It, Why People Demand It; and Christian Reflections on the Leadership Challenge. In 2001, with his co-author Jim Kouzes, he won the International Management Council's Wilbur McFeely Award as top management and leadership educators. Barry received his undergraduate degree in political science from the University of California, Santa Barbara, a Master's degree in Public Administration from Ohio State University and a Doctorate in Organisational Behaviour and Administrative Theory from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

SRIKUMAR RAO

Dr. Srikumar Rao is the Louis and Johanna Vorzimer Professor of Marketing at the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University, USA, and an Adjunct Professor at the London Business School. Previously he had extensive business and consulting experience with blue-chip corporations. He is author of the best-selling book Are You Ready to Succeed: Unconventional Strategies for Achieving Personal Mastery in Business and Life and has developed a course on Creativity and Personal Mastery that has a particular focus on resolving conflicts between personal values and workplace actions. Srikumar has an undergraduate degree in Physics from St. Stephen's College at Delhi University, India; an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management; and an M.Phil. and a Ph.D. in Marketing from the Graduate School of Business at Columbia University.

SIMON ROBINSON

Dr. Simon Robinson is the Running Stream Professor of Applied and Professional Ethics at Leeds Metropolitan University, UK. He is also Assistant Director of the Centre of Business and Professional Ethics and a Visiting Fellow in Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Leeds. Beginning his career in psychiatric social work before training in Oxford for the Anglican priesthood, he spent fifteen years as Senior Anglican Chaplain at the University of Leeds. A committee member of the Society for the Study of Christian Ethics, he has a concern to locate ethical reflection in practice and is the author of Spirituality, Ethics and Care and co-editor of Case Histories in Business Ethics: Virtues and Moral Decision Making in Business. Simon has an undergraduate degree in Philosophy and a Ph.D. in Theology and Ethics from the University of Edinburgh.

TERRY PEARCE

Terry Pearce is the Founder and President of Leadership Communication, a company that coaches high-profile corporate, political and community leaders. He is also an Adjunct Professor (retired) at the Haas Graduate School of Business at the University of California Berkeley and a visiting faculty member at the London Business School for the MBA and the Sloan Fellowship Programme. He is author of the best-selling book Leading Out Loud: Inspiring Change Through Authentic Communication and co-author of the best-selling book Clicks and Mortar…Passion-Driven Growth in an Internet-Driven World. He spent seventeen years as a manager and executive with IBM and in the 1980s he pioneered American business activities in the Soviet Union. Terry holds a B.S. in Business Administration from Linfield College, Oregon.

ANNE SCOULAR

Anne Scoular is a Co-Founder and now Managing Director of Meyler Campbell, which is a research-based coaching consultancy involved in training and developing senior business coaches. Originally a diplomat and then an international banker, for the last twenty years she has consulted and coached on business performance issues in the UK, Asia and North America. She is on the Worldwide Association of Business Coaches (WABC) expert review panel on coach training and the International Advisory Board of the Centre for Applied Positive Psychology (CAPP). In recognition of her work in raising wellbeing at work, she was invited in 2006 to become a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine. Anne has a B.A. in History from the University of Otago, New Zealand, and a Post Graduate Diploma and M.Sc. in Psychology from London Guildhall University.

DAVID SELCHEN

Dr. David Selchen is General Manager of the Houston operating office of Personnel Decisions International (PDI), which is a global human resources consulting firm that helps clients identify, develop and deploy superior leaders. As a consultant for PDI, he has focused on the application of psychology to enhance individual and organisational performance and has expertise in the use of individual assessment for selection and development, multi-rater feedback processes, group training and facilitation, and executive coaching. Prior to joining PDI, he ran his own business psychology consultancy. David holds a B.S. degree in Psychology and Biology from the University of Winnipeg, Canada, and a Doctorate in Experimental Psychology from the University of Oxford.

MIKE VOIGHT

Dr. Mike Voight is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Education and Human Performance at Central Connecticut State University. He has been a sport psychology-performance consultant for the University of Southern California since 1997 and a consultant to coaching staffs in collegiate and professional sport. A former assistant soccer coach in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCCA) Division 1 at the University of North Carolina Charlotte, he is author of a number of books on sport psychology, including Mental Toughness Training for Football. Mike earned an undergraduate degree in Physical Education from Springfield College, MA; a Masters degree in Athletic Training from Jacksonville University; and a Ph.D. in Exercise Science from the University of Southern California.

DAVID WHITAKER

David Whitaker, OBE, is a Co-Founder and Partner of Performance Consultants LLP, which provides consultancy to business in the fields of coaching, leadership development, organisational performance and change, and talent management. He works with senior executives and teams in a variety of sectors to promote high performance. A former international field-hockey player, he subsequently spent eight years as Coach for both England and Great Britain. After leading Great Britain to Olympic Gold in 1988, he was chosen as Coach of the Year and was Chair of Sports Coach UK (2002-2006). He is author of several books, including The Spirit of Teams. David earned an undergraduate degree from Loughborough University and spent fourteen years in leadership roles in the education sector.
